Safeway's To-Do List

Sound Study

One of the main comments we heard from adjacent neighbors is they want noise from the Safeway site to be reduced. Noise comes from a variety of sources, including delivery trucks, recycle bins, car stereos and alarms, leaf blowers, and loitering. To address this concern, Safeway hired Jim Nelson, an acoustical engineer with expertise in grocery, commercial, and residential sound studies. In October 2011, Jim met with our La Playa and 48th Avenue neighbors in their homes. They worked with Jim as he conducted an extensive Sound Study on the existing conditions.

Upon completion of the final report, we will post it on this website.

Interim Sound Solution

The overall Safeway project will be phased construction.

Phase I - Build new Safeway store on Fulton.
Phase II – Demolish old Safeway store.
Phase III – Build parking.
Phase IV – Build residential and small retail store.

Safeway was asked how sound from its parking lot will be addressed prior to building the residential units. Safeway has committed to developing an “interim sound solution” which addresses this question. Our acoustical engineer, architect, and residential consultant are studying the options and upon completion will post recommendations to this website.

Exterior Maintenance & Security Plans

We have heard comments and feedback from the community wanting to enhance the shopping experience and reduce loitering onsite. Safeway has pledged to collaborate with neighbors to develop an Exterior Maintenance and Security Plan.

Project Review Process

Before submitting a formal development application to the City, Safeway will announce the submittal date on this website. Additionally, Safeway will continue to provide Supervisor Mar’s office with all current information and copies of application documents.

The estimated date for submittal of a formal development application is Spring 2012. After submittal of a new application, the project will undergo the Planning Department’s public review process which includes numerous opportunities for community review and comment.
